Dear Runnymede family,
This is indeed sad news; Arthur Powell has been a very important person in my life and the lives of so many others.
All our sympathies and thoughts are with Frank, Julia, Cristina and the grandchildren. I will never forget Mr Powell’s encouragement, support and constructive criticism during 7 tears at Runnymede. He never (ever) gave up on me, and was always a source of wisdom and inspiration.
Our deepest condolences,
Gonzalo de la Vega

After my father, Arthur Powell was the only other 'adult' person to discipline me or otherwise 'get angry' with me while a young adolescent. It is with much regret that I never found the opportunity to go back and thank him for the 'extra chances' he afforded me at the time and to share a moment of reflection on what came to be after that. Unlike the fictional Mr. Chips, Arthur Powell managed to have children of his own, with whom he surely had his issues as well, but at times I like to think that I was one of Mr. Powell's 'little people'.
Arthur Powell will not be missed, because he will always be with us in our memories.
Miguel Rivas-Micoud

My thoughts and prayers are with all the family now. Please pass on my condolences to them.
Thanks.

Sebastian Laiseca Segura

Oh my God, what an enormous feeling of sadness suddenly. I don’t have enough words to describe what a wonderful person he was. He was so special,.... he was the BEST! Un abrazo enorme for his family.
Renée van de Graaf

Arthur was my mentor and much loved father figure for many years. He was a man of the most generous spirit, highest intelligence, warmth, kindness and humour. To the very end he sustained his interest in all his students, politics, philosophy, economics and almost anything that makes the world go round. And, in no small measure, Arthur's enduring legacy through Runnymede College, will go on making this world a better place.
I share Julia's and his family's loss and will miss him badly. However, I will always be grateful to Arthur and will continue trying to live up to the high standards he set.
With sadness and love.

Dear all...
A man who definitely left a mark on me has just left us, and I must say, this has affected me in more ways than I thought it would. I can’t say I had a special or any kind of relationship aside from a normal headmaster/pupil relationship, but evidently I’m wrong. Suddenly, when I received the mail, memories from my brief time spent in the Runnymede College invaded my mind and the first image that came to me was of me, my dad and Mr. Powell sitting in his old office in Calle Arga, and talking about the school. The school that was something completely new and strange to me (because of the uniforms), the school that would become a part of me, and the school which (I think) made me (in a lot of ways) who I’m today.
I remember Mr. Powell telling me not to worry. Of course I was worried, but the way he said it made me think that maybe I was taking all of this too much to heart. I thought... This guy is cool. He expects the respect he deserves being the headmaster of the school, but at the same time, he’s treating me with respect, he understands my problems... Bottom line, he cares. And he cared throughout my four years in Runnymede. If I had a problem and asked him for advice, he would always find time to listen to me and try to help me out. This was all I needed. At that time, and as I’ve learned much later, and in much worse situation (at the frontline during the war in Croatia – but this is a completely different story), Mr. Powell was in my mind and thoughts. When I heard of his death earlier today, I suddenly felt the urge to write this. I was never good at writing, and I’m not one of those sentimental guys, but I just couldn’t help it. Obviously, Mr. Powell deserves a few words, even if they are written by someone who is not very skilled or eloquent.
I wish to express my sincere condolences to Mr. Powell’s family and close friends, and of course to everybody who came to know this extraordinary gentleman.

Dear Family,
I was quite sad to hear about Mr Powell's demise. I was in Runnymede from around '92-'94 and remember him well as a kindly and well respected headmaster, though he did have his comical side, if my memory doesn't fail.
He took my first interview on arrival at school and I remember him as being friendly and interested while treating us as equals. He made us (my sis and I) write an essay, the theme being life as a diplomat's daughter or something and was highly complimentary on our efforts, which helped us: new as we were, in school and in Spain.
Well, I am sad that he has gone but though I didn't know him personally, I feel that he certainly led a rewarding life and has certainly made his mark. He was a part of an important phase in my life and my memory of him will always be of his bright eyes, grey suit and hair. This is a time to grieve but also to rejoice: for a person is the sum of our memories and we all have wonderful memories of him.
Will he be reincarnated? Will he be in heaven? Who know? the important thing is that he will be remembered and thanked.
All my support and regards to those left behind,
Julie Peate née Singh

My deepest condolences to the Powell family.
I must agree with most Runnymedians that Mr. Arthur Powell inspired great respect and it must be noted that his life efforts to educate are greatly appreciated by those of us who had the chance of studying in the school he dreamed of and eventually created.
I send my deepest feelings of respect to all the family, who allowed the dream of Mr. Arthur Powell to continue.

Queridos Julia, Manolo, Carlos y Paloma,

I am very sorry to learn about the death of Arthur Powell.
Even though I didn’t know Arthur Powell very well since during my school years he already spent most of his time away from the school, I only have very good memories of him. He was a good man with a warm heart and he will be greatly missed.
As were my old Runnymedian classmates who today remain some of my best and closest friends, I was very saddened to hear the news.
My thoughts are with his family and close friends,
Warmest regards,
Lorenza Alessie

I would like to send my condolences to the Powell Family and to Runnymede College.
I attended Runnymede from 1995 until I left Spain for University in June 1999.
Mr Powell taught me Spanish when I first arrived in Year 9.
I look back on my years at Runnymede with great affection and that has a great deal to do with the sense of family and community that comes with attending the school.

I also send this message on behalf of the rest of my family. My parents Bob & Michele Cooke, my sister Annabel and my brother Nick.
Yours sincerely,
Sonia Cooke

Dear Frank,

I offer my sincere condolences and extend my deepest sympathy to the Powell family on the sad loss of Arthur, forever ‘Sir’ to me.
The most impressive legacy and recognition he has left us with are all of us “Runnymedians” around the world.
Without him none of us would have had the privilege and benefit of such a broad and rich education, an education that was more than just academic achievement. A Runnymede education enriched us all with social values, culture, tolerance, appreciation and above all wisdom.
A truly great man, forever in our thoughts.
Joost Hartog

My wife, Frances, and I are saddened by the news of Arthur's death but are heartened by knowing he died peacefully and with the people he loved and who loved him.
Arthur provided me with my first teaching job when I had just qualified in 1973. We have many wonderful memories of the 3 years we spent - very happily - in Madrid. I am due to retire in August this year and yet my memories of the school in Calle del Arga are vivid and fill me with pride. Although we have not visited the school in its new setting we have been back to Madrid on several occasions and keep in touch with Frank and MariJose Murphy.
I am much envied by my colleagues and by my pupils for my sojourn in Spain and it has never failed to be a source of pleasure and fascination. Our sincere condolences to Julia, Manolo, Charles and Paloma. In this time of sorrow we hope there is some comfort in the knowledge that Runnymede has had a tremendous influence in the lives of so many - and not just students.
Sincerely -
Colin and Frances Mail

Dear Julia, Frank and Charles, Cristina, Manuel and Georgina,
I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to you all at this sad time.
Arthur was a blinding beacon of inspiration to the students of Runnymede College, past and present, and his dedication and wisdom will undoubtedly continue to influence future Runnymedians for the better.
My kindest regards and love to you all,
James Claverley
Old Runnymedian

I was privileged to be at Runnymede during the first few years of the school and enjoyed being part of a wonderful close-knit community which Arthur (and Julia) created. Arthur's knowledge, enthusiasm and enjoyment made Runnymede into the school it is today. He played a huge part in my life - and thousands of others. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to Julia, Manolo, Charles and Paloma.
Un abrazo,
Ant Frend

To the Powell family,
I wanted to express my most sincere condolences for the loss of an indubitably great and noble man.

I offer you all my warmest thoughts and greetings.
Sincerely yours,
Adrian Cachinero Vasiljevic

My deepest condolences to the Powell family. It is a very sad day for all of us who went to Runnymede. We will always keep the warmest memories of him. He created a wonderful school, which was always run like a big family; those of us who live abroad will always strive to find another "Runnymede College" for our children and that is his legacy! My heart goes out to Julia, Manolo, Paloma, Charles and their families.

Arthur has always had a special place in my life, he is one of those legends that you tell stories about in the pub (all good I hasten to add!). I am very glad that I saw him in 2006. He will be missed.

Dear Powell family,
My heart is with you during this "goodbye". I take the opportunity to thank Mr. Powell for all he has given us, taught us, and shared with us. He was not only a creative pioneer and believer of big dreams, but a man with a big heart. He remains the symbol of Runnymede and of school years that each of us treasure for guiding us towards our own, individual paths and adventures. He now rests in peace just as does my father who passed away a few months ago....may this thought comfort you during this difficult moment.
With all my sympathy and prayers,

So sorry to hear the sad news. My sincere sympathy for the loss of Arthur Powell.
Our most sincere condolences,
Frances Jones and family

It is with great sorrow that I received the news of the demise of Mr. Powell today, and I extend my sincerest condolences to all the Powell family as well as to all the Runnymede teachers and staff.
Above all, I extend my condolences to all of us who have had the great fortune of studying at Runnymede, a school and environment that have shaped me in many ways and have had a profound and positive impact on my life, as I am sure on the lives of many of my classmates and friends.
This is thanks to the relentless and dedicated life that Mr. & Mrs. Powell have expended toward the high quality education cause. In doing so, they never failed to convey their parental warmth toward us all, thus engraving Runnymede in our memories despite the elapse of almost 30 years to our days there.
May the memory of Mr. Powell remain alive through the generations as a tribute to his and Mrs. Powell’s great contributions toward educating us and bringing such good fruits to our lives.

Queridos amigos,
My prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
Un fuerte abrazo para todos,

Dear Powell Family,
I would very much like to extend my condolences to all the family for your big loss. Mr. Arthur Powell was really a great man, and was always very sweet to me. I am really lucky to have got to know him during my 6 years at Runnymede. He kept me very busy in some detention sessions, telling me very funny stories of the family!! I have many great memories of him, and he will not be forgotten.
May he rest in Peace.

Dear Frank,
I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I will never forget your dad he was such a lovely man. I often used to talk to him in the office at Runnymede. He had such a kind face and when I was feeling homesick (which was quite often!!!!) he cheered me up!!
Love to your family.
Take care

Querida familia Powell,
Paz Ortiz

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Powell’s death but grateful to have had the privilege of his presence in my life. He was a remarkable human being who touched all of our lives with a legacy that has lasted through the decades. A man of courage and perseverance, not only with his RAF service during WW2, but also in starting a British school in Madrid in the late 60s; this last with his right-hand lieutenant, Mrs. Powell, by his side. A fantastic teacher, he made history come alive and his classes were a joy. I loved his morning assemblies as well in Calle Arga where the whole school would listen to him first thing in the morning. Inspirational and so accessible, through his kindness and compassion, he was there for each and every one of us. He had great integrity and one felt his decisions were always just; he brought a smile to our face with his ready wit. Having visited Mr. and Mrs. Powell with my three children some years ago and gone out for tapas is such a wonderful memory. My heart is with Mrs. Powell and all the family at this time and may you find comfort and strength in the overwhelming love and respect so many of us have for Mr. Powell and for Runnymede College.
Patricia Kelly (de Wess)

Our sincere condolences to the Powells. It is very sad to hear such news; Mr. Arthur Powell was very much loved and respected, a real inspiration to us all.
Best wishes,
Varshaa, Parvesh & Sundeep Chugani

My deepest sympathy goes to the Powell family at this very sad time. Mr Powell was a legend in his own right. To set up a school in a fantastic City for many generations to enjoy from all backgrounds! It was a fantastic school which taught you not only a good education but the most important lesson - it taught you how to get on with any religion, any nationality and not judge people. He created a close community where people of all ages got on together and generally enjoyed life. I for one enjoy many happy memories from Runnymede - for one my very first spanish lesson where Mr Powell taught us "playground Spanish" so that we could understand some of the more "popular" vocab exchanged by kids! I now regret not having visited in so long! Some people I guess you think will be around forever!
Best wishes to the family.

Deep sadness, here, from California. Arthur Powell was a towering figure for me, literally and morally, when I was growing up and well after I left Runnymede. I hope he was able to recognize that his hero, John Maynard Keynes, was finally returning to received wisdom in economic circles after all these decades of craziness.
We'll miss you, Don Arturo, and thank you for your convictions: in delight, in ornament, in ability.
Abrazos to all from the Laws.
Alison Law Kent

Siento de todo corazón esta noticia. Mis mas profundo pesame a la familia Powell.

Dear Powell Family,
I am very sorry for the passing away of Arthur.
I attended Runnymede from 1989 to 1994, and just wanted to say what an extraordinary school he founded, and what an incredible legacy he has left. Although I later moved to Buenos Aires and finished school there, I always remember the love of learning and life lasting friendships that Runnymede gave me. They accompany me still.
Wishing you peace,
Amalia Rivera

Dearest Powell family and Runnymedians,
My deepest sympathies to Julia, Manolo, Charles, Paloma and all the Powell family on the passing of Arthur Powell, my dear headmaster who we all cherish so much. It is with tears in my eyes and great sadness that I write these words. I will always remember with great fondness and gratitude my years at Runnymede, under the wise gaze of Arthur Powell, for whom I will always have great admiration and respect.
I remember him as a brilliant gentleman and a role model. I loved his sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye at seeing himself surrounded by a gaggle of beautifully uniformed students. Those were the early days of Runnymede at Calle Arga 9, 11 y 13, in El Viso.
Respectfully,

My sincerest condolences to the Powell family at this time.
Arthur was a huge presence around Runnymede, particularly when I was younger, and he always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. I think it's fair to say that nobody who has posted in this book would be where they are today without his dedication and enthusiasm to education and to Runnymede itself for so many years - his name will certainly live on through the school.
Once again, my deepest condolences to you all.
Stephanie Magub

Dear Julia, Manolo, Charles and Paloma

My deepest condolences goes to Julia and the family. As one of his first pupils from the first day the school opened in 67, I remember that day so clearly as he welcomed us into his new school.
He was very dedicated and successful headmaster as we see today. He was kind, warm hearted and cared a lot for his school and his pupils.
Runnymede will always be associated with Arthur Powell, and he will not be forgotten by many who went in his school either as a pupil, or worked for him as a teacher.

My condolences to the Powell family. It's hard to believe i saw Arthur Powell last year during the Runnymedian's dinner, these news shocked me a bit.
I never got to know him as well as my sister did, but nevertheless, a great man, and i know he'll be deeply mourned. It was an honor and a pleasure to have been part of what he created.

I was very saddened to hear about Arthur’s death.
As an ex-Runnymedian I was lucky enough to spend 5 years under Arthur’s supervision and was very kind to me during my years at the school. I have very fond memories of him.
My wife Mari Carmen, and my kids Emma and Alex (both at Runnymede) are thinking about you and your family during this very difficult time.
I know that your family and friends as well as all past and present members of Runnymede will help you make it through this challenging time.

We are so saddened by Arthur's death. Our thoughts and heart go to all the Powell Family.
We left Runnymede in 1993 but we are Runnymedians at heart and cherish the memories lived and values learnt over those wonderful years. With his vision, Arthur Powell has illuminated our lives in so many ways and we are very grateful for that. Runnymede was not only about learning subjects, it was also about developing as a person. The values we learnt continue to guide us in life: respect, dialogue, hard work, tenacity, confidence and above all tolerance: that all human beings are equal regardless of religion, race, nationality and deserve respect and understanding.
Thanks for the humanist education and for the universal values but also for creating a school were we could learn not only through academia, but also through sport, art, music, photography, debating, theatre, etc. In Runnymede mind, body and spirit are equally nourished.
Thanks for creating this inspiring learning environment but also for the wonderful, plays (still remember watching West Side Story) the crowded debates and Christmas Carols singing in the dining room in Arga, or quizzes, the house captain election and sports days, the trips, the discos and so much that made Runnymede unique and special.
We will always remember Mr. Powell as a gifted, bright, talented Giant for his vision but also for being the most caring, warmest, sympathetic and down to earth headmaster that one could wish for.

My sincere condolences to the Powell family and to Runnymede College. I was one of the first pupils back in 1967!!! I remember Arthur Powell as a kind headmaster with a good sense of humour not at all a distant authoritarian figure. As pupils we felt part of a family where we all knew each others names and the atmosphere of the school was very friendly.

Please pass on my deepest condolences to the family.
Despite a life lived long and well, there is always a great sadness and loss when our loved ones leave on their final journey.
I remember my first encounter with Arthur Powell as a young, shy 15 year old girl, with great dreams - newly arrived in Spain. He was a tad... daunting, both in size and demeanor, however over my time at Runnymede that feeling passed and I found him to be a wonderful teacher and mentor.

I am really sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Powell, he coped admirably with us rowdy lot who were in quotes 'the worst behaved year to ever go through this school!' ( & Numont apparently!), we probably gave him some headaches but he gave each one of us who had the misfortune of being sent to his office the chance to explain our version and give us sound advice on how to pick 'our socks' up and improve. He always struck me as a kind and wise man and a pioneer in bringing bilingual education to brilliant level. We all came out good in the end! My most favourite memories are at El Viso
My thoughts are with the family ....
Kind wishes

Dear Mr. Powell,
I was very upset when I heard about the sad demise of your father Mr. Arthur Powell. He was a great man and touched the lives of many.
Many of us are short of words, but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Hola Julia, Paloma, Manolo y Carlos,

I wish to convey my most thoughtful condolences to the Powell family. My family and I regret the loss of our "patriarca". Mr Powell and Runnymede College have been a constant source of inspiration throughout my entire life. Life without Mr Powell will never be the same again. As when my father died in 1996, a part of me also dies without Arthur Powell. I will remember him always.

Dear Powell Family:
What strikes me immediately while reading the guest book is the shared sentiment of loss and also of gratitude for the way Arthur's influence touched our lives. Forty-two years ago he had a Vision... did he ever in his wildest dreams imagine that his Legacy would continue with his own Family at the helm? I remember Arthur as a to-the-point, yet kind and caring. He knew all of us by name and our parents as well. I never felt that I was "in the presence of the Headmaster," but rather of someone who wanted to make a difference. Heaven has gained an Angel. God Bless You, Arthur.
Esther Fink (Marfy)

I was devastated when I read the news of Mr. Powell’s death today. He was a man I admired and thought of dearly. He created a school which was ‘different’, where we all felt as a BIG FAMILY (our second family) and he was our FATHER. He really cared about us and together with Mrs. Powell and the teachers, managed to give us wonderful memories of the most important period in our life, which is our school years.
Our warmest condolences to the family from my sister Aliki and myself. We will always remember him as the kindest and warmest headmaster and person, that he was.
Best regards from Greece
Elli and Aliki Dimitriou

Our sincerest condolences to Mrs. Powell, Manolo, Charles and Paloma.
It is sad to lose someone with such talents. We are grateful that he established Runnymede and built it into the school we know, which our boys enjoyed and from which they learned and benefited so much.

What sad news, to hear that Arthur F. Powell ( Mr. Powell to us, even after so many years....) has left us. He was a caring and generous man, and
I have very happy memories of him and the school during my Runnymede years in Calle Arga in the 1980s. I am sure his two families, the Powell family and the Runnymede family, both past and present, will miss him dearly.
All my love to Julia, Frank, Charles, Paloma and the grandchildren,

Dear friends,
Sorry to hear about, the loss of my headmaster as he was a great man who was always helpful and supportive, he always encouraged us to improve, put more effort and passion on whatever we had to do and become better people.
Never did he gave up on many of us as he had great expectations on each and everyone of his students and staff.
It has been an honour to meet him and share so many years with an institution that I firmly believe will pass on his legacy to future generations.
I could not help read the visitor's book, and feel really sad as I remember most of the people in it, most of my friends, and share their loss, grief and sorrow with all the runnymede family,.
Julia, Frank and Cristina, my most sincere condolences.
I always had great respect and sympathy for him and can only add one more thing, thank you Sir Arthur F. Powell, true essence of an extraordinary gentleman, we will never forget you.

Dear Mrs. Powell,
I am deeply affected by your and your children's loss. As you know, I had much affection and respect for dear Arthur. Indeed I cherish the photographs of your lunch at my place in the country. I had more than once called a home phone number which however no longer belongs to you, just to query how you and Arthur were keeping, and perhaps to share a cup of tea with you. My work keeps me travelling constantly, however, I would appreciate if I could be informed of a mass or memorial which I would want very much to attend.
I met Semina last night who told me of Arthur's passing away. My prayers, deepest sympathy and thoughts are constantly with you and family. I feel deeply your loss - he was an institution in himself. What an amazingly good school both ran, Ismael I know has wonderful memories of his days there. The interest in each child by yourselves and teachers was immensely comforting. And then of course the academic level spoke for itself. Arthur Powell represented all the good values in life, he was indeed bigger than life and will be missed.
With love and prayers,
Laila Khan

Dear Julia, Frank and Cristina,

Dear Powell family
I was profoundly moved to hear of the sad loss of Arthur Powell. I remember him fondly as being a good man, most endearing, enthusiastic and with many a joke to share. He was a particularly positive role model and an inspiration to many a Runnymede pupil passing through Calle Arga and La Moraleja. He will remain in my memory as a significant figure and a very distinguished man. My deepest and heartfelt condolences are with Julia and the rest of the Powell family at this sad time.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Arthur's death on Monday and, as the day wore on, I found that I could only focus on the happiness that he had brought to my life.
I joined Runnymede in its first year along with my brother John. It has always been a matter of regret that I could only spend two years in what, at the time, felt like an extended family. I had never before felt that sense of belonging at a school and I would never feel it again. That sense of community was fostered and nurtured by Arthur and I feel sure that his influence and example have guided me, and many others, ever since.
My thoughts are with Julia, Manolo, Charles, Paloma and their families at this sad time.

To Julia, her sons and the Runnymede Family:
My family and so many others who have benefitted from Arthur and Julia's dedication are eternally grateful for their great work at Runnymede College - right from those pioneering days of the late 1960's and 70's.
It has been a privilege to have had children at this remarkable institution - go well, Arthur and may Monolo keep up the good work he has been doing after taking over from his father.
Our thoughts are with you, Julia, and your sons,

Querida familia,

Dear Mr and Mrs Powell
I was deeply saddened when I heard the news, and I give my most sincere condolences to your family. Arthur Powell was the backbone of the institution that was my home for over 10 years, and I will be forever in debt . He was a great man, and I'm sure will remain in the hearts of all who ever met him.

My deepest condolences to Julia, Manolo, Charles, Paloma and the grandchildren. Arthur was a true gentleman. In addition to the excellent education we received at Runnymede, I very often remember his valuable advice about life in general, and about having the courage to study and work in what you truly enjoy. Julia and Arthur created a great sense of family and twenty years after leaving school I work with five other Runnymedians.
Thank you Mr. Powell for teaching so many good values through your own example.
Un fuerte abrazo,
Tamara de Kobbe

A lamp has been extinguished.
In these days, when the phrase "I had a dream" has recovered its power, it is comforting to remember the dream that Arthur Powell shared with me. Six months after leaving Runnymede, remarkably in an underground jazz club in Cambridge, Arthur told me of how he endeavoured to create an English Public School "overseas". What he valued in this, he explained, was to form the character of his pupils, inject a series of values and abilities that not only prepared them for the world at large, but also made this a better place. This was half a life-time ago for me, and since then I have travelled far and wide - an opportunity granted to me because of the foundations set in Calle Arga - and met individuals of all colours and flavours. I know now that there is such a thing as a Runnymedian, a way of thinking, an attitude, which is particular; a kernel of a person recognisable amongst all the other baggage that each of us carries. Arthur Powell's dream was a reality well before he shared it with me, and still he worked day after day to maintain that dream alive.
A lamp has been extinguished, but it will take more than that to turn its light out.
Thank you Arthur
Ismael Juan Khan

My sincere condolences go to the Powell family and all those connected with Runnymede College on the sad loss of Arthur Powell.

Dear Mrs. Powell, Paloma, Charles, Frank and family,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Powell, a man for whom I felt both respect and admiration. I can clearly recall the first time we met, at the end of the afternoon, when I was about to take the Runnymede entrance exam. He was extremely kind and reassuring and I immediately liked him. As time went by I felt that we genuinely became friends. I will always affectionately remember his sense of humour, his intelligence and his charm.

Dear Julia, Frank, Charles, Paloma and family,
Please accept my sincerest condolences at the passing away of Arthur. Arthur was a great man. I have fond memories of him whilst at Calle Arga. As well as leading a fantastic school, Arthur imparted wisdom, caring and fun. My first Spanish lesson was in his office, wih Arthur imparting Spanish with passion. This helped us to integrate into the school quickly. The skiing trips in his Landrover on a Wednesday afternoon were the highlight of the week. We will all dearly miss him! I hope you find strength in knowing that a part of him lives on in the pupils he so much cared for.
With heartfelt sorrow,
Sidney Johnston

Dear Julia, Frank, Charles and Paloma,
It was with great sadness that I heard of Arthur’s passing but at the same time I couldn’t help but be in awe at how much he gave so much of himself to so many children throughout his life. He and Julia certainly helped guide a lot of us through those tumultuous teenage years with love, firmness and a wonderful sense of humour and yet they never took their eyes off providing all a stellar education. My memories of growing up and going to school are very happy ones.
All the Robertson family send their thoughts and prayers to you all at this sad time.
With love,

Queridos Julia, Manolo, Carlos y Paloma,

We are very sorry to hear of your loss. We will always be very grateful to Arthur Powell and to the school, and have many fond memories of him. He was a great man. With our deepest sympathy and affection,

Several years ago, we had the chance to speak with Arthur at a Runnymede event. The discussion turned to how each of us would want to be remembered after we are long gone. Arthur said that he wanted people to think of him as someone who 'always gave his best'. Ever since then this has become our family motto.
We are grateful to have known him, and also to be part of the Runnymede community as it continues to do the important work that he began.

Dear Powell Family,
I am very sorry for your loss. Arthur and Julia Powell have done a lot of good to a lot of people by setting up Runnymede, and it is sad to see such a wilful person as Arthur passing away. I hope that despite these moments of grief you may still continue to make Runnymede the fantastic school it has been for me and many other students, for I'm sure that it is the best way to honour Arthur Powell's life. My best wishes go with you.

Dear Powell family,
My parents and I were saddened to receive the news of Sir Arthur Powell's death. These must be hard times for the family and friends, as we say good bye to a good man, admired by many. We can find consolation, however, in the knowledge that his memory will remain at the heart of Runnymede College.

I will always be grateful to Arthur Powell for giving Alan and me the chance to get to know Spain, where we have now been living for so long. He could make the most awful gaffes and backhanded compliments, as everyone who worked with him knows, but this was part of his natural exuberance and energy, which was so important to the school. His principles and objectives were solid, and he had a great sense of fun.
Lanna Rustage

Dear Mrs. Powell, Manolo, Charles and Paloma,
No word can really comfort you or express my deepest gratitude for all what Mr. Powell did for me. Regrettably, I will not be able to join you for the memorial celebration but please know, my heartfelt prayers and wishes are with each one of you.

His values were embedded in the school ethos and passed on to all of us, which has played an important part in my adult life. Please accept my deepest condolonces.

Dear Julia, Manolo, Charles and Paloma,
Please accept our deepest condolences for your sad loss.
The three years I spent teaching mathematics at Runnymede were among the happiest days of a long teaching career. We were a newly married couple when we arrived in Madrid in September 1976, the help and support we both received from Arthur and Julia extended beyond the bounds of our expectations, we remain forever thankful.
I have worked for and with many heads and principals throughout my career, Arthur Powell was an outstanding leader who provided a first class learning environment free from prejudice, fear and jealousy. He will be much missed by many people.
Kindest regards,
Alan and Maria Heap

I was sorry to hear about the recent death of Mr Arthur Powell. From the numerous condolences received, it is comforting to know that he touched the lives of so many people from around the world, as he did mine, through his dedication to improving education, and his tireless commitment to his pupils and their families. Sadly I was not among his model students, but he was always just and fair anyway! He will indeed be sorely missed. At the same time, I was pleased to learn recently from the college website that Mr Powell's legacy lives on through his son Manolo who continues to spread his father's vision to an even greater number of children from around the world.
To Mrs Powell, who was always at her husband's side, and the rest of the Powell family, please accept my heartfelt condolences at this sad time.

This is a belated tribute to Arthur Powell.
Thank you, Arthur, for taking the initiative of founding a British school in Madrid. An initiative you carried out so intelligently against many odds.
Six de Kobbes attended that first school in Arga, El Viso, and it was fundamental in their lives. Not just academically, but in every way. I remember, for instance, your saying "Discos are good for them - dancing is excellent exercise, for one thing." Just an instance of your believing in an all round education.
Thank you also for selecting such a wonderful staff, many of whom have stuck to Runnymede through thick and thin. I have to mention Mr. Murphy here as your main prop and they all helped you, together with dear lively Julia, to leave behind you such a legacy. Hundreds perhaps even thousands by now, of young and middle-aged people who will always remember Runnymede. I join them as a parent - an old lady now- among the great number of tributes that arrive from all ends of the earth.
With love,
Carmen de Kobbe

I am most sorry to hear that Mr Arthur Powell passed away.

Dear Friends,

Dear Mr. Powell,
I’d like to extend my condolences to you, Mrs. Powell, Paloma, and the rest of your family for your great loss. Your father was a great man with all the great values that are seldom found in only one individual. He was a role model to all of us. He built a very special place at Runnymede! There are few places like it! I became extremely saddened when I heard he passed away. I remember how he always encouraged me to learn how to fly due to his service in the RAF. I now fly as a hobby and I that is thanks to him!
I attended Runnymede in the 80’s (I was a classmate of Paloma) and have very fond memories of my school years there thanks to your parents, the faculty, and all my classmates. I received a great education at Runnymede. I now live in the US and every time I visit Madrid, I always jog by the old Runnymede during my early morning run “echando de menos esos dias!“ I will remember your father in my prayers.
With warmest regards,

We just received the memorial brochure from Runnymede thereby learning of the passing of Mr. Powell. Everyone in our family has such fond memories of our time in Spain and life at Runnymede. Mr. Powell's vision and dedication to Runnymede has been a gift to so many, including our family. We all have fond memories of him, and I especially remember Christie coming home after having a Spanish lesson in "playground language." He certainly knew how to get the attention of the class. May you all be comforted knowing he was a man of great wisdom, integrity, and importance to so many and his legacy lives on at Runnymede. Bless you.
